Meet Chef Carla

Learning to cook for herself at a young age sparked Carla’s love affair with food. Her Family’s roots are from the Southern United Stated and such she fondly remembers her Grandmother cooking grits, biscuits and gravy from scratch most weekend mornings.

Carla and her husband Bart are parents to three wonderful children Elisha, Abbey and Evan. After spending fourteen years in the Dental field, Carla decided to hang up her scrubs and pursue a long time dream of becoming a chef.

Her enthusiasm for all things culinary led her back to school in the fall of 2012 to pursue her diploma which then enabled her to step out professionally and enter the world of Culinary Arts. While studying she won first place in the 2014 Cultivating Culinary Competition sponsored by Foodland Ontario – her winning dish was tested and awarded first place be renowned Canadian Chef Christine Chushing. She was then asked to be part of Burlington’s first annual Beer Festival during which she performed workshops on cooking with Beer.

She joined the EarthFresh team to further foster her love to cook in a fun and supportive environment. Carla is always available to answer questions, share Potato tips and recipes to our customers and clientele alike. Carla is thrilled to “plant her roots” with EarthFresh and looks forward to growing with the company.

When not busy being a Mom or volunteering at her kids school, you’ll likely find Carla at local food markets or out in the country buying local food produce. Fresh, clean food is her passion and Carla strives to buy and supports local as much as she can. Without fail every Saturday she spends countless hours in her happy place – the kitchen – cooking up a storm for her friends, family and educating them on food they are about to eat. Food makes her happy – her motto is “I cook to taste the world”.

Organic Potatoes – F.A.Q

We want what is best for our families. At the grocery store, we are presented with claims such as organic, non-GMO, and all natural that can be confusing and overwhelming.  At EarthFresh, we believe that it is important for you to understand where your food comes from and what these different labels mean so that you can make the right choice for you and your family.

What does organic mean?

Organic food is grown and handled using practices that aim to sustain the health of soils, ecosystems and people, adhering to standards set by governing bodies worldwide.

You can be confident that you are purchasing certified organic products when you see these logos:

In Canada, organic products adhere to standards set by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

In the United States, organic products are produced according to organic regulations set by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).

Does organic mean pesticide-free?

An organic label means that only approved products and practices were used in its production. Most organic food tests free of chemical pesticide residues. Sometimes, residues can appear on organic food because chemical pesticides can be found in the air, water, and soil. Many studies have concluded that choosing organic products can reduce your exposure to chemical residues.

Does organic mean non-GMO?

The use of genetic engineering or genetically modified organisms (GMOs) is prohibited in organic products. At EarthFresh, all of our organic and conventionally grown potatoes are non-GMO.

Does organic mean the same thing as all natural?

Using the term “organic” is regulated by strict standards set by the CFIA or USDA, whereas the term “natural” or “all natural” does not mean that the product meets organic standards.

Are EarthFresh potatoes organic?

We offer both organic and conventionally grown potatoes to align with what is best for your family.

Should I choose organic or conventional potatoes?

We believe that this is a choice you should make based on your personal preferences and what is best for your family. It is important to focus on putting more fresh fruits and vegetables, organic or non-organic, on your plate to live a healthy life. Potatoes are a nutritional powerhouse of healthy carbohydrates, potassium and Vitamin C. You shouldn’t miss out on the health benefits that potatoes provide if organic produce doesn’t fit into your life and budget. Both organic and conventionally grown EarthFresh potatoes are safe, healthy and adhere to strict food safety standards.

For more information on organic regulations in Canada, you can visit the CFIA website.

For more information on organic regulations in the United States, you can visit the USDA website.
